Unschooling Links

fountain of knowledge

I believe homeschooling is the best educational choice you can make for your children. I favour the Unschooling approach which was originally conceived by John Holt. In a nutshell, unschooling is child-led learning - education in freedom and with no element of coercion. Just from observing my own children, I know that this approach allows children to flourish. It not only allows them the freedom to learn in the way that they learn best and at their own pace. It also enables them to experience the confidence which we as adults have, in that they are able to directly have control over their own lives by having the freedom to choose how they act. This really fosters a strong, healthy self esteem in that they are comfortable with who they are and with their place in the world. Learning is very much an active process with the child choosing what they will do for the day, rather than sitting passively at a desk soaking up the knowledge which is issued to them. As the child chooses what subjects they will learn, they are highly self-motivated to find out as much as they can and they will remember the information much more clearly as it has real meaning to them.
